Jose Mourinho leaving the pitch after United were beaten by West Brom.

Jose: I know what we need to challenge for the title

Jose Mourinho has highlighted exactly how his Manchester United side must improve in order to win the Premier League title next season.

The Reds suffered a shock defeat to West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday, which meant that the 2017/18 crown went to rivals Manchester City with five matches to spare.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Mourinho told reporters that he remains confident of winning the title at United but admitted his players need to be more consistent across the campaign.

“I trust in my work, that is for sure,” the manager told reporters following the final whistle at the weekend. “I have no reason not to trust. The last Premier League title that I won was not 20 years ago, it was three years ago and I know how to win. I believe in myself.”

Expanding on what United must do to overcome City, Jose continued: “You don't win titles with inconsistency. You win titles with quality, of course, and without quality you have no chance.

“But you also win titles with consistency. That is consistency at every level and not just the performance level, but day by day everything must be consistent from day one until the last day.

“So one of the things we have to improve is consistency.”

United hope to bounce back from the defeat against West Brom during Wednesday night’s Premier League match at Bournemouth and the Vitality Stadium.
