Key quotes: Mourinho reacts to Everton win

Sunday 17 September 2017 20:30

Jose Mourinho was a happy man following Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Everton in the Premier League, which was secured by goals from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial. This is what the manager said to MUTV afterwards…

What did you think during the second half about a possible Everton comeback?
I always thought it would be 1-0 or 2-0, I ever thought about 1-1. The 2-0 came and then the third and fourth goals were just consequences of a team that was sad and another team that was happy. For me, the third and fourth goals were a little bit out of the context of the game.

Does Valencia always hit them like that in training?
Sometimes but it's not easy to score such an amazing goal. But sometimes he does.

After scoring one and setting up another, you must be pleased with Lukaku?
I would be pleased even without that work he does for the team, the way he opens spaces for us in the first half, I was more than pleased. One more goal, fantastic, one assist. But his overall work is more than that.

David De Gea kept his 100th United clean sheet and made some great saves today…
It is more difficult when you are sleeping. You don't touch the ball for minutes and minutes and then have an important moment in the game. So it's even more difficult and even more important.

Three wins at home, with 12 goals scored and none conceded. Are you happy?
I'm happy. There is clearly a difference in relation to last season. We played better and we score more goals. Every match is a different match and the next one, against Burton, who come on the back of an important result against a good team like Fulham. It will be another difficult match for us.

THE MANAGER's PRESS CONFERENCE

Mourinho also sat down in front of the national press at Old Trafford to discuss a wide range of topics that included Paul Pogba's injury, title rivals Manchester City and why the Reds are scoring so many late goals…

Injury update on Pogba: "Any comment or any new rumour is totally wrong because we don't know if it is 12 weeks or 12 days. The player was diagnosed initially after the match because of the conditions of the muscle and the bleeding. The decision was one more week to wait to see really clearly in the scans, that I mentioned, of the injury. Nobody in this club spoke about 12 days or 12 weeks. Not at all. In the hamstring, it's a normal procedure and we wait a few more days. So it's completely nonsense information.”

Boss not thinking about Manchester City: "Today, I didn't think for one single second about Manchester City. I thought about Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. They lost points and it was a chance for us to get two points on them, like they got on us when we drew against Stoke. I'm just thinking about them, never City. They won their game. They did their job. I was thinking about the others when I saw their results and thought it was an opportunity we could not waste.”

Why we're scoring late goals: "The Premier League is becoming very defensive. Many teams try to play with five at the back, plus two or three in the middle, or sometimes four in the middle. Two teams try to match each other and play the same system and it's 0-0 or 1-0. Sometimes, when you have a little bit more space, you try in the last part of the game and they were losing 2-0 and they tried to come [at us] more and they gave us more spaces. I think it is down to that.”
