Zelem: You can see how together we are

Saturday 17 September 2022 16:13

Katie Zelem lauded the bond between her United team-mates after the Reds thumped Reading 4-0 at Leigh Sports Village on the opening day of the 2022/23 WSL season.

Our skipper made her 100th appearance for United against the Royals, scored from the spot and producing two assists in a frantic first period of action.

Following the commanding victory, Zelem applauded the togetherness of Marc Skinner's squad, citing the performance as a reminder of how hard our players work for each other.

Zelem: This year we've got even better

Captain Katie Zelem says United Women are stronger this season, after defeating Reading 4-0 on the WSL opening day...

"I think [togetherness is] something that Manchester United women's has always had," she said. "And for us, I think it's something that we've really based ourselves on and this year it's got even better.

"We've added seven new players and every single one of them as brought a great energy and great vibe to the team.

"I think you can see how together we are off the pitch and it translates on it."

Zelem also discussed the impact of two new recruits in particular: Maya Le Tissier and Lucia Garcia.

Le Tissier was voted Player of the Match after scoring twice on her debut, both assisted by our skipper, and Zelem says the 20-year-old's goals were a fitting reward for a superb debut.

"You've seen Maya's face, she's more shocked than the rest of us [to have scored brace]," Zelem said. "[It was] a great performance from Maya."

"She fully deserves her debut as well. She has shone in pre-season and she deserves to be the starting centre-back at the minute."

Player of the Match: Maya Le Tissier earns plaudits from her captain.

Fellow debutant Lucia Garcia was unlucky to have evaded getting on the scoresheet after multiple attempts were either saved or blocked, but Zelem believes those goals will come in due course.

"She's lightning honestly," said Zelem of the Spaniard. "We see her in training every day and she doesn't stop, up and down that wing.

"Goals will definitely come for her. She puts balls in the box all the time, she's great off both feet, so she's going to be great for us this year."

A restless performance from Lucia Garcia earns Zelem's praise.

As well as a resounding win, we welcomed a record attendance for the women's team at LSV this afternoon with over 7,000 fans coming out to cheer on the Reds. Zelem gave our supporters a big shoutout, crediting them for helping Skinner's side start the campaign in the best possible way.

"We could hear them the whole game," she said. "That's the energy we bring as a team and we know the fans bring from the side.

"[It was] a great performance but [there are] still things to build on."
