Zelem: We want to win trophies

Thursday 28 September 2023 12:00

Manchester United midfielder Katie Zelem is eyeing silverware ahead of the upcoming season, which kicks off this Sunday, 1 October.

After a 2022/23 campaign that saw us create history, our skipper is determined to build on the team's success.

“We created so much history last season, whether it be in the league or the cups,” Katie told club media.

“Wins, goals.... I think we managed to smash pretty much every [club] record out of the park.”

Katie Zelem has seen a lot of change with United Women, but our goal is the same: to achieve more and more success...

“Manchester United is about winning trophies,” Katie continued.

“That is something we want to do.”

Our upcoming campaign will see us write a new chapter in the history books, with Old Trafford hosting its first women's Manchester derby.

Playing at the club’s historic ground is always special, according to our no.10.

“Whether you’re a United fan or not, it doesn’t really matter [because] when you turn up at Old Trafford, you can see the history behind it, you can see why it is called The Theatre of Dreams.

“It's not just for the girls on the pitch, but for the staff, family and friends that are watching. It is a real occasion for everyone to celebrate.”

Everything you need to know ahead of our WSL opener at Villa Park this Sunday.

The 2023/24 campaign with be Zelem’s sixth with the club, and the fifth in which she has sported the captain’s armband.

That kind of leadership has also been recognised at international level; the United skipper started for the Lionesses in both of their recent UEFA Nations League clashes, including Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands, and assisted Lucy Bronze's opener in the 2-1 win over Scotland.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve got the armband on, it is the type of person you are,” Zelem told us, when asked about captaining England prior to the World Cup.

“I just want to share my knowledge and help people around me as much as I can, whether I’ve got the armband on or not, that comes out in me.”
