Martinez helps Argentina record important win v Mexico

Saturday 26 November 2022 21:20

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez played 90 minutes and helped Argentina defeat Mexico 2-0 in matchday two of the 2022 World Cup.

Our centre-back was one of five changes made for the contest by Lionel Scaloni from the XI that started Tuesday’s shock defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Martinez played 90 minutes and was part of an effort that yielded a clean sheet on the way to an important three points, with second-half strikes from Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez the difference.

Lisandro had been introduced as a second-half substitute against Saudi Arabia on matchday one but was in from the start this time around as the South Americans looked to bounce back.

The first half was tense, cagey, hard fought and a stop-start affair with fouls a regular feature between both sides looking to triumph for the first time in the tournament.

It was goalless at the break but the impetus was all Argentina’s after Messi netted the opener with a precisely drilled effort on 64 minutes.

A curler from Fernandez with just over three minutes left of normal time was then enough to make sure of the win on a night that the two-time winners would have gone out on with a loss.
The South American nation are now second in their group ahead of the final round of matches, behind only Poland (four points), who they’ll meet on matchday three.

That fixture takes place at Stadium 974 in Doha on Wednesday (19:00 GMT), with a win guaranteed to take Martinez and co through to the last 16.

Earlier in the day in Group C, Poland defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 at the Education City Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.
