How does Luke Shaw prepare on a matchday?

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw says his mobile phone is a distraction on matchdays, and avoids using it in order to concentrate on the game.

Shaw was one of three Reds who was named in England’s World Cup squad on Thursday, with Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford also earning place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man list.

Players learned of their inclusion via text or phone call, and the 27-year-old says that awaiting a notification on his phone was different to his normal matchday routine.

“It was yesterday before the game,” Shaw said in an interview with club media on Friday, when asked what it was like receiving the news that he would be representing England in Qatar this winter.

“I don’t really tend to go on my phone, I like to just leave it on silent. [I] don’t focus on that, just focus on the game.

“But I knew there could be a text coming so I was waiting for it and when it came through, it’s such a great feeling.”

Before Shaw – and many other Reds – jet off to join up with their respective national teams, United face a trip to Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ahead of his final fixture before the winter tournament, Luke is eager to sign off with a positive result.

“I think it’s really crucial [to win],” he said. “With the result we had last weekend, I think we have to win this game.

“It’s important because of where we want to be towards the end of the season. After dropping points last week it’s a massive incentive to go and win this game.”

But despite being confident in United’s ability to get a result, Shaw insists Sunday’s hosts will be no pushovers.

"They’ve got a really good manager [and] really good players,” he said of the Cottagers. “Obviously, it’s nice to see Andreas [Pereira] there. He’s doing really well, and I think it’s going to be a very tough game.

“They’re a really good side but the most important thing is how we prepare for it [and] how we start the game.”
