Manchester United players line up before kick-off at Craven Cottage

Revealed: United's Man of the Match v Fulham

Wednesday 20 January 2021 23:47

Manchester United equalled a club record 17 Premier League away games unbeaten by overcoming Fulham 2-1 on Wednesday – a result which took the Reds back to the top of the league table.

The Cottagers took the lead in the opening minutes through Ademola Lookman, but for the seventh time in the league this season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team came from behind to win.

Edinson Cavani lashed home an unfortunate spillage from Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, following a dangerous Bruno Fernandes cross, and then Paul Pogba struck an incredible second-half winner – with his lesser-favoured left foot – to ensure we hauled all three points back to Manchester.

But who was the standout performer during a match in which United had to produce some brilliant moments at both ends of the pitch?
Serial award-winner Fernandes was once again in the frame after inspiring United's equaliser and hitting the post himself during a frenzied few first-half minutes, and the Portuguese was back to his menacing best throughout much of the game.

Cavani also polled strongly, after a mature display in which his predatory instincts and intelligent movement were in full effect.

Elsewhere, there were plenty of votes for Fred, who put in a typically tenacious, terrier-like showing in midfield, while Luke Shaw – Man of the Match in our last game, away to Liverpool – also gained a decent share of the vote after yet another consistent 90 minutes.
But there was one overwhelming winner for users in our Official App, as you may have already guessed! We're talking, of course, about our match-winner, Paul Pogba.

The French midfielder – who was Man of the Match at Burnley just eight days ago, after another decisive goal  – struck a second-half screamer at Craven Cottage, catching out Areola with a sprawling left-footed drive that flew into the corner of the goal and sparked wild celebrations on the pitch and in the dug out.

The World Cup winner had picked up a yellow card for a foul on Ola Aina early in the match, but continued with maturity, intelligence and no little graft in a complete midfield performance.

His crashing winner was no more than he and United deserved, and rightly earned him tonight's award.
