Revealed: United's Man of the Match
Bruno Fernandes was voted as Manchester United’s Man of the Match in the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.
The Portuguese midfielder scored both of the Reds goals, with the first coming from a free-kick in the opening stages of the game after a fumble by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
It was Bruno’s first United goal for over a month, with his previous strike coming during the 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the beginning of December.
With Ralf Rangnick opting to set United out in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Fernandes thrived in the no.10 position and doubled his tally midway through the second half. Villa’s Morgan Sanson gave the ball away in midfield and Fred pounced, squaring to Fernandes who fired into the roof of the net, via the crossbar.
That effort took Bruno to 55 goal involvements in 70 top-flight games since joining the club two years ago.
Only Mohamed Salah can beat that tally in the equivalent timeframe, but our no.18 will no doubt be as disappointed as the rest of the lads that United weren’t able to see out the win.
Two strikes in five minutes from Jacob Ramsey and Philippe Coutinho prevented the Reds from recording a fourth successive Premier League win at Villa Park, although we still haven’t been beaten in B6 in the league since August 1995.
Fernandes took home 47 per cent of your vote in our post-match poll and it was his first MOTM award since October, when he was star man in the draw with Everton.
Bruno’s now on to three awards for the season, behind Cristiano Ronaldo who has five.
But David De Gea still tops our list of winners, with the Spaniard having claimed Man of the Match six times in 2021/22. David came second in tonight's poll, after another solid performance between the sticks where he made several important saves before Villa's late salvo. Anthony Elanga finished third in the poll after an exciting display on the wing.
