Revealed: Our Man of the Match v Southampton

Wednesday 03 February 2021 00:03

Manchester United equalled the record Premier League win as we ran riot with a 9-0 destruction of Southampton.

The historic scoreline matched the thumping Sir Alex Ferguson’s Reds handed out to Ipswich Town at Old Trafford in March 1995, when Andy Cole scored five goals.

Against the Saints, the goals were shared between seven different United players, plus an own-goal as we took full advantage of a 77-second red card for Alex Jankewitz.

All nine goals from our record-equalling win over Ralph Hasenhuttl's side are now available for you to enjoy...

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s merciless side were 4-0 up at half-time with goals from Aaron Wan-BissakaMarcus RashfordEdinson Cavani accompanying a Jan Bednarek own-goal.

In the second period, the ruthless Reds refused to ease up as we ripped into the Saints with a late onslaught that saw a further five goals.

Half-time substitute Anthony Martial started the second 45-minute romp, Scott McTominay added one before Southampton were reduced to nine men when Bednarek’s night of misery was complete as he was dismissed for a foul on Martial, and Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty.

After that, Martial netted again, and another sub Daniel James completed an unforgettable night.

But who was United’s top performer on such a memorable night?

Once again our midfield architect Fernandes polled highly as he helped run the show and scored from the spot. Luke Shaw, who was rested at half-time, also put in a first-half stint that caught the eye with two assists for Wan-Bissaka and Cavani’s first goals at Old Trafford.

Two-goal Martial featured among your votes in our Official App, as did McTominay, who joined in the goal bonanza.

But it was right-back Wan-Bissaka who nicked the honours from Bruno to record his second successive Man of the Match victory, having topped the poll against Arsenal last Saturday night.

He kicked off the night of destruction with an 18th-minute goal and was a constant threat to the Saints all match.
