Revealed: Man of the Match v West Ham
Manchester United managed to rescue a point against a defensively resolute West Ham United on Tuesday evening.
Tomas Soucek gave the hosts the lead, just after half-time, when he got a touch on a drilled Jarrod Bowen ball, which looked like keeping all three points in the capital, until deep into stoppage-time.
But then, with six of the seven added minutes played, Bryan Mbeumo found Benjamin Sesko in the box, who expertly flicked a finish around Mads Hermansen, on the volley, to level things up right at the end. The Reds sought a winner but were forced to settle for a draw.
After the full-time whistle, we asked our fans who you thought was the star man at the London Stadium. Here's how you voted...
Collecting an impressive 40 per cent of the vote, our Man of the Match is, of course, Benjamin Sesko.
The Slovenia international started the game on the bench and replaced Matheus Cunha in the 69th minute, having precisely the impact that will have been desired by Michael Carrick when making that call.
His first attempt on goal came a little over five minutes after his introduction, showing the power of introducing fresh legs late in the game, taking a long-range effort that forced a rare save from Hermansen.
The Dane would have no such luck with Sesko's second attempt, a deftly placed volley, which was almost reversed around the striker's marker and into the top-right corner, far beyond the goalkeeper's reach.
Kobbie Mainoo also attracted significant attention from supporters, with 12 per cent of the vote.
On another day, the young midfielder would have had an assist himself for a pinpoint delivery to Casemiro's head, which the Brazilian was able to nod home in his stride, but a VAR review showed the scorer had strayed marginally offside.
Case took 10 per cent of the poll himself, not only for that disallowed goal but also for a characteristic all-action display in the centre of the park, which saw him win the most duels (8) of any player on the pitch.
He received the fourth-highest vote, with Bruno Fernandes slotting in at third with 11 per cent, our captain, once again, proving to be a chance-creation machine with four opportunities made, the most of anyone on the night.
Sesko’s brilliant equaliser
GOAL | Benjamin Sesko showed his quality with an incredible equaliser in added time…
But it was always going to be difficult to beat Sesko's match-saving moment, more than worthy of our fan-voted Man of the Match award on this occasion.
Congratulations, Ben!
Thank you to everyone who voted.
