Who won our Man of the Match vote?

Saturday 30 July 2022 16:14

Sunday's friendly against Rayo Vallecano will be shown live on the United App, MUTV and ManUtd.com.

Manchester United fell to a first pre-season defeat in Oslo on Saturday, as Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix found a late winner to settle a closely fought encounter.

United dominated for much of the 90 minutes, creating the better chances and looking the more threatening, but have to head back to Manchester without the win.

Nevertheless, there were some good aspects to our performance and the day in general, including an impressive debut for Christian Eriksen and a number of strong individual displays. That made our Man of the Match poll an intriguing one, with several Reds polling solidly...

New boy Christian Eriksen understandably fared well, despite only entering the field of play in the 69th minute.

His early touches were greeted with joy by the crowd, and an excellent cross was within inches of finding Marcus Rashford's forehead just minutes later.

Shortly after that, he delivered a perfect inswinging corner that Harry Maguire would typically have headed home nine times of of ten.
But despite that blip, Maguire was another who fans showed support for. The England defender was cheered throughout and contributed in both defence and attack, via some typically strong challenges and several quality passes. He also made some crucial interceptions to deny promising goalscoring opportunities for Atletico.

Another who polled well was Fred. The Brazilian was shown a second yellow card in the final moments of a fractious game, but was at the heart of much of United's best work. Operating at the base of midfield, he was busy, energetic and always willing to support his team-mates.

Marcus Rashford performed well, too. Sadly, another pre-season goal eluded him, but he showed some great close control and persistent willingness to run in behind, taking plenty of tough challenges from the opposition defence.

But the winner of our Man of the Match award was left-back Tyrell Malacia, who used a starting opportunity to push his claim for next weekend's Premier League opener against Brighton.

The former Feyenoord man oozed class, with plenty of skill in the final third and a thirst to get stuck in wherever possible.

He even came close to opening the scoring in the second half, when his rising shot soared just over Jan Oblak's goal.

The defender gained a healthy 27 per cent of your vote, ahead of the aforementioned Fred (19 per cent) and Eriksen (17 per cent). Behind that trio were Rashford (8 per cent), Maguire (7 per cent) and David De Gea (5 per cent).

Congratulations to Tyrell, and thank you to all that voted.
