Revealed: Your Man of the Match at Bramall Lane

Thursday 17 December 2020 23:18

Marcus Rashford scored two goals and picked up as many awards on Thursday night, as Manchester United beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Bramall Lane in the Premier League.

The Academy graduate bestowed with the prestigious FIFA Fair Play award ahead of the game, in recognition of his recent inspirational charity work to help underprivileged children in the UK.

Marcus was not present during that virtual ceremony because he was busy preparing for our vital match in Yorkshire, where he went on to score our first and third goals in a pivotal top-flight victory.

Marcus speaks to us about his brilliant brace, our six away wins this season and a tight Premier League table...

Rashford’s first goal was a joy to watch, after his world-class first touch to control Victor Lindelof’s long ball was followed by a powerful finish to beat opposition goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

“Sometimes it is the most simple way of scoring a goal, but at the end of the day a goal is a goal,” he told us afterwards. “The easiest way to score a goal is what we will take as a team.

“Going forward was good and we could have punished them more, but they are the things we need to improve so we will take the positives from the win, and where we can do better. That is how we will pick up points in the next game.”
After Anthony Martial had made it 2-1, Rashford scored his second goal with a low strike to cap a wonderful team move that started all the way in our own half.

“It is what the team is capable of doing,” Marcus said. “The players, we just want to do it more and more consistently. We know we can do it every five games or six games, but can we do it every week? That is the challenge for us and we will give it a good go in the next game.”

Sheffield United got a goal back late on to prompt a nervy conclusion, but the Reds held on to secure the win and, after the final whistle, our Official App poll asked you to name a Man of the Match.

Fans could select any one of the 14 players who were involved, yet it was Rashford who emerged as the runaway winner with a massive 67 per cent of the votes.

Paul Pogba, who was excellent in midfield against the Blades, and so effective for our second goal, finished as runner-up with 15 per cent.

Bruno Fernandes has won more Man of the Match awards than any other player this season, yet he was only third on this occasion with 10 per cent.

Congratulations to Marcus on an excellent performance.
