United Women are crowned champions.

We've done it! United Women are champions

Saturday 20 April 2019 13:50

Manchester United Women have been crowned the winners of the FA Women's Championship for the 2018/19 season.

Casey Stoney’s Reds sealed top spot in the second tier with a resounding 7-0 victory against Crystal Palace Ladies in the Easter Saturday sunshine at Leigh Sports Village.

Lauren James scored four goals and Lizzie Arnot, Leah Galton and Jess Sigsworth were also on target, to ensure the crucial three points which were required to clinch the title on the day.

United Women are now an unassailable 10 points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, who travel to Charlton Athletic Women on Sunday, with just two games left to play.

Saturday’s success follows Wednesday night’s thumping 5-0 home win over Aston Villa Ladies, which clinched promotion to the Women’s Super League in some style.

The status of champions is the icing on the cake for Stoney’s side in an incredible inaugural campaign, in which they have also reached the Continental Tyres League Cup semi-finals and the SSE Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals.

To date, the Reds have won 16 of their 18 league games this term – recording 49 points, scoring an impressive 88 goals and conceding just seven times.

The squad will be presented with the trophy after the final league game of the season, at home to Lewes on Saturday 11 May (kick-off 17:30 BST).

Following that last outing of the campaign, the Reds can then focus on preparing for a maiden venture into the top flight in 2019/20.

In the meantime, once the dust settles on the celebrations, next up is our final away match of the season – against Millwall Lionesses at Princes Park in Dartford on Sunday 28 April (kick-off 14:00 BST). A draw would take us to the 50-point mark.

Everyone at the club would like to congratulate the team on their well-deserved achievement.
