United and Leeds pay tribute to Gordon McQueen

Poignant tributes were paid to the late, great Gordon McQueen prior to Manchester United's pre-season meeting with Leeds United, following the defender's recent passing.

The much-loved Scotland international represented both clubs during his impressive career, serving Leeds between 1972 and 1978 before crossing the Pennines to make the switch to Old Trafford. He made a total of 229 appearances for the Reds before his departure in 1985.

Our friendly in Oslo was the first game either team had played since Gordon sadly died last month, and the opportunity to remember him was fittingly taken before kick-off at Ullevaal Stadion.

❤️ Treble winners Henning Berg and Ronny Johnsen paid touching tributes to the late Gordon McQueen ahead of kick-off...

The captains of the respective sides on the afternoon - Raphael Varane and Liam Cooper - both wore shirts with 'McQueen 5' printed on the back as they led their team-mates out of the tunnel.

An image of Gordon was displayed on the big screens around the stadium, and a minute's applause was observed as the teams stood together on opposite sides of the centre circle.

Meanwhile on MUTV, Treble-winning defenders Henning Berg and Ronny Johnsen shared their memories of McQueen during the pre-match build-up.

"I grew up in Norway watching United play in cup finals as a kid," said Berg.

"One of the players I remember from when I was seven, eight, nine years old was Gordon McQueen, dominating in defence. He played with Steve Coppell, Lou Macari, Gary Bailey... all these guys. For sure, it's always sad when ex-players and good guys pass away."

A poignant minute's applause was observed at the Ullevaal Stadion in Gordon's honour.

Johnsen recalled meeting Gordon and, like Berg, said he was a player who stood out to him when he was growing up.

"I was fortunate to meet him as well and he was a very nice man," added Ronny.

"I was very sad to see him go. As Henning said, I remember him from when I was a kid. I collected football cards and always in my team was Gordon McQueen."
