United announce official retained list

Friday 16 June 2023 12:30

Manchester United's retained list has been sent to the Premier League, ahead of the full announcement.

In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals.

Extensions were also processed for defenders Rhys Bennett and Ethan Laird, while Under-21s player coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to stay after discussions over a new contract.

Young forward Mateo Mejia has also been offered a deal.

United say farewell to Tuanzebe

 Article

The popular defender is set to depart at the end of his current contract, after captaining the club at every level.

As announced last month, centre-back Phil Jones is leaving after 12 years and 229 appearances for United.

Fellow defender Axel Tuanzebe is departing after 37 first-team appearances, having captained the Reds at every level since joining the Academy as an eight year-old. Axel wore the skipper's armband in a Carabao Cup tie against his hometown club, Rochdale, in 2019.

Tuanzebe, who famously got the better of Kylian Mbappe in our group-stage victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2020/21, has been hugely unlucky with injuries during his time at United but returned to action on loan at Stoke City last season.

Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard are seeking new opportunities elsewhere after loan spells at Salford City and Portsmouth, respectively. Both made their first-team debuts for United in a 2019 Europa League clash against Astana in Kazakhstan.

Eric HanburyCharlie Wellens and Manni Norkett are leaving the Academy after the end of their current terms. The Academy is proud of all our departing young players and their achievements while at the club. They will all be supported in securing professional contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme, and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United.
