United discover Carabao Cup opponents

Wednesday 23 September 2020 20:53

Manchester United will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with the tie due to be played next week.

Graham Potter's side overcame Preston North End 2-0 on Wednesday evening with Alireza Jahanbakhsh opening the scoring for the Seagulls in the 56th minute, before Alexis Mac Allister added a second.

It was a first-ever win for Brighton at the 17th attempt at Deepdale and sets up two meetings with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men at the Amex Stadium in a short space of time, with our next Premier League outing taking place at the ground on Saturday.

Watch 20 minutes of extended highlights to see exactly how the Reds progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth round...

Last season, United beat Brighton 3-1 at Old Trafford in November before a 3-0 away success in June - our first three points from the fixture since their return to the top flight.

The tie is the Reds' reward for beating Luton Town 3-0 on Tuesday night at Kenilworth Road.

Juan Mata's penalty separated the teams at the interval, before late strikes by substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood sealed a smooth passage in the competition.

The match will be the third meeting between the clubs in the League Cup, after a two-legged affair in 1992.

Danny Wallace scored in a 1-1 draw at the Goldstone Ground, with Matthew Edwards replying for the home side. Mark Hughes hit the winner at Old Trafford to clinch a 2-1 aggregate triumph.

United reached the semi-finals of the competition last season and last lifted the trophy in 2017, when beating Southampton 3-2 at Wembley.

Full fixture details will be published as soon as they are confirmed.
