United discover FA Cup third-round opponents

Monday 30 November 2020 19:17

Manchester United will face Watford at Old Trafford in the third round of the 2020/21 Emirates FA Cup.

The tie is set to be played on the weekend of 9 and 10 January 2021 and will be settled on the day, with games decided by extra time or penalties if necessary – there are no replays in the competition at all this season, to ease some of the pressure on the football calendar, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final is set to take place at Wembley on 15 May 2021 and the Reds are bidding for a 13th title – only holders Arsenal, with 14, have won the famous old competition more often.

We are, of course, familiar with the Hornets, having faced them on numerous occasions in the Premier League in recent years, before their relegation to the Championship in July.

Watford’s last visit to Old Trafford came in February, when goals from Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood helped us to a 3-0 victory.

Our previous FA Cup meeting came at the semi-final stage in 2007, with the Reds winning 4-1 in that particular tie, held at Villa Park.

Overall, United have come out on top in four of five ties with the Hertfordshire club in this competition, with our only defeat coming in the third round in 1982.
