Youngster raises thousands after epic trek to Old Trafford

Old Trafford witnessed the conclusion of a very special journey earlier this month, when seven-year-old Harvey Goodman completed a 40-mile trek which has raised more than £23,000 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Theatre of Dreams to show their appreciation and support for the young Red, including his cousin Zak, who is currently being treated at Alder Hey for an aggressive form of cancer.

It’s not the first time the youngster has gone above and beyond to raise money either – last year he walked to raise more than £7,000 to enable his school to transform its playground.

Harvey’s mum, Naiomi Goodman, told MUTV: “I’m so, so proud. It wasn’t easy the whole way. Harvey did struggle a bit, but he got a second wind towards the end, and we’re incredibly proud. The money we’ve raised is... I’m speechless.

“The support and encouragement he’s had over the last two days has been amazing. I’d like to thank everyone who has donated to his JustGiving page. He’s raised such a lot of money, which will help so many children and their families.”
United legend Sammy McIlroy joined the walk at one point, as did Harvey’s headteacher, teachers and many friends and family members, plus representatives from Golborne Sports Club, Leigh United and Leigh Rugby Club.

“What a little champion Harvey is!” praised Sammy Mac. “His drive and determination throughout this walk has been amazing and the fact he’s raised such a lot of money along the way is incredible. The reception was unbelievable. It’s great to walk down Sir Matt Busby Way and you see these people [walking] for a really great cause, Alder Hey Hospital. This little lad has been absolutely amazing.”

Young Harvey has no plans to stop, either.

“He actually met Sir Alex Ferguson last year and told Sir Alex he was going to walk to Wembley!” laughed Naiomi. “Luckily we managed to negotiate him down to 40 miles instead of 175! But I definitely need a year off!”

“This is the second year he’s done something,” continued McIlroy. “Last year it was [raising money for] the school playground. He just keeps going. He wants to do more. He’s a fantastic kid.”

Congratulations to Harvey and all his family and friends from everyone at Manchester United, after such a remarkable, inspiring effort.
