Your favourite last-minute goals revealed!

Wednesday 06 April 2022 14:30

Tuesday was the anniversary of Federico Macheda's unforgettable stoppage-time debut strike, which secured a crucial win over Aston Villa in the title race.

That sparked an idea about United's best-ever late goals in the Premier League - and there have been plenty to choose from.

United have scored many goals in the 90th minute or later in the top flight since 1992, with efforts from club legends like Steve Bruce and Paul Scholes to more unlikely figures, such as Macheda and John O'Shea.

But which is your favourite? Take a stroll through memory lane by reading some of the replies to our tweet...

Let's start with the early stuff, and @JaceT1981 nominates Steve Bruce's header for the ages to down Sheffield Wednesday in 1993, adding it was 'crucial to our first title win in 26 years.'

Another defender in O'Shea gets the nod from @robslater07 for his 90th-minute winner at Anfield 15 years ago: Sheasy didn't score many goals, but when he did, he tended to go big!

Late goals against rivals will always be remembered, hence @Nathan5483's shout for Michael Owen's 96th-minute finish in 2009's Manchester derby at Old Trafford, while strikes by Robin van Persie and Scholes at the Etihad were also in the replies.

“They thought they'd got a draw and then we snatched all three points,” Nathan wrote. “The atmosphere in the stadium that day was like nothing else. Unbelievable!”

Scott McTominay's 2020 goal versus our crosstown rivals also gets a nomination from @rusty_cpt, although it did, of course, make it 2-0 to United, with Anthony Martial having already scored.

@sattyysingh01 says Javier Hernandez's goal in another 4-3 win, this time over Newcastle United on Boxing Day 2012, 'was something special',  while @Blueninja658 plumped for Nemanja Matic's stunner at Crystal Palace in 2018 - our Goal of the Season winner and one of only two league strikes the Serbian has managed for us so far.

Marcus Rashford is a serial scorer of late goals, having notched no fewer than four 90+ minute Premier League winners for United - @RealG_Matangwa mentioned Old Trafford strikes against Wolves, from December 2020 and West Ham, this January.

Possibly our most dramatic late goal of all came at Brighton last season, when Bruno Fernandes netted from the spot - after the final whistle had blown and following a VAR check for handball.

There will be tons of dramatic goals we haven't mentioned, which just sums up how much of an important part playing to the end has become for United over the years!
