United make club history with win

Manchester United's 4-1 victory at Newcastle United has completed a sequence of away results that have never been bettered in our top-flight history.

Ever since the club was formed, we had never won six successive Premier League or Division One matches on the road, while scoring at least two goals in each of them.

Even Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson's all-conquering sides never managed this particular feat, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's troops pulled it off by coming from behind to run out convincing victors, in the end, on Tyneside.

The streaks of five successive away wins, scoring at least twice on each occasion, include one that started with a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace that virtually sealed a first Premier League title in April 1993. It ran into the following season as part of a seven-game overall winning run on the road.

There was another in late 2001/early 2002 that included six goals across the five fixtures for current boss Solskjaer, boosted by a hat-trick from the Norwegian in a 4-0 thumping of Bolton Wanderers. In fact, his six strikes came in the final three matches of that period.

A five-fixture stretch in 2006 featured four consecutive 2-1 triumphs after a 3-1 success at Portsmouth, courtesy of a goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy and a double by Cristiano Ronaldo.

And the last time we managed five away wins on the trot, scoring at least two goals, came in 2012. It kicked off with a dramatic 3-2 win at Southampton, as Robin van Persie bagged a treble, and ended with a victory by the same scoreline at Aston Villa, with Javier Hernandez denied a hat-trick when one of the efforts went down as a Ron Vlaar own-goal.
