Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United name side to take on City

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named the side he hopes will take the Reds to Wembley, as neighbours City provide a formidable obstacle in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

Ole's men are out to avenge last season's defeat in this competition at the same stage, as a 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium proved insufficient following a 3-1 home reverse to the Blues in the first leg.

This time around, the last-four games are a one-off affair with extra-time and penalties, if required.

Jose Mourinho's Tottenham await the victors in the final, after their 2-0 triumph over Brentford on Tuesday night.

With so much at stake, the boss has understandably picked a full-strength side with Victor Lindelof returning to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence, following a back problem. Dean Henderson starts in goal, as he has done in all of the previous rounds of the competition, and makes his senior home debut for the club.

Paul Pogba looks likely to play off the left-hand side of midfield, possibly in a diamond formation. Juan Mata, outstanding in the first couple of ties in the Carabao Cup this term, is among the substitutes, along with David De Gea and Eric Bailly, who make way from the XI on duty against Aston Villa last time out.

City have had a few COVID-19 issues of late but have also named a strong line-up, although Ederson is still unavailable so Zack Steffen is again the keeper, as he was at Chelsea.

"We’ve had a few days of rest and preparation training for this game so I didn’t feel the need to make too many changes," Ole explained to us. "I felt the team against Aston Villa played quite well and Dean has played really well in this tournament, and Victor and Harry have been working well together. Eric has played four games now on the trot and he’ll keep on playing but tonight was one for Harry and Victor.

“Of course it is [Dean's home debut] and he’s been looking forward to playing in this ground for many, many years and it’s finally happened. He’s prepared well and has been training on the pitch just to get his surroundings and get his bearings which is brilliant preparation."
