Who will be United's Player of the Month?

Wednesday 30 August 2023 12:00

Manchester United's 2023/24 season is well and truly up and running, with six points already on the board and plenty of positives to highlight as we reflect on the first month of action for Erik ten Hag's men.

But as well as assessing the results and performances of United as a team, we also take the opportunity at this point in the calendar to pick out some of the individuals who have impressed us across the recent weeks.

The first men's Player of the Month award in this new season is therefore up for grabs and we have shortlisted three Reds for your consideration - one new signing, the new club captain, and an established defender who has picked up from where he left off last term.

Read on for summaries of each candidate's contributions to the cause in August, before carefully casting your vote. The winner will be announced this Saturday, on the eve of our first September fixture, away to Arsenal.

Why Bruno was Man of the Match

BRUNO FERNANDES

The Portuguese magnifico ended his maiden month as permanent United captain in typically inspirational fashion, as a worthy winner of our Man of the Match award following the thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Nottingham Forest.

In addition to firing home the game-sealing penalty, Fernandes created the vital equaliser by cleverly heading Marcus Rashford's delivery back across the face of goal to his gleeful and grateful fellow midfielder Casemiro. And Bruno's overall display, leading by example with his lung-busting runs, embodied the spirit that Ten Hag's men needed to put a brief period of adversity to bed.

As for his previous August outings, the recently appointed skipper accepted he missed a golden opportunity to give United a deserved half-time lead at Tottenham. But apart from that wayward header, our no.8 was otherwise sharp in that first 45, instigating many of the Reds' best attacks.

The month began for Bruno with a proud moment, as he led the team out at Old Trafford for the first time in a competitive match since being given the armband. Nothing less than a win would do for such an occasion, and he did as much as anybody in a red shirt to ensure Wolves were sent packing at the end of a 1-0 home triumph.

ANDRE ONANA

The Cameroonian's competitive debut for the Reds represented a changing of the guard at Old Trafford. For the first time in 12 years, there was a new first-choice goalkeeper between the posts as David De Gea's successor lined up against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wearing his favoured no.24 shirt, rather than the no.1 occupied by De Gea since 2011, Onana kept Wolves at bay to register a Premier League clean sheet in his very first outing in the competition. He also collected our Man of the Match award, but there's much more to the summer signing's game than merely making saves.

Onana's ball-playing ability, for example, was evident in the away game against Tottenham Hotspur, with an audacious crossfield pass to Alejandro Garnacho when the Reds were dominating the first-half proceedings. And although he was beaten twice in the second period in north London as Spurs won 2-0, and again in the first four minutes at Old Trafford as Nottingham Forest raced into a shock lead, our acquisition from Inter Milan could not really be faulted for any of those concessions.

Andre could instead take plenty of credit for his part in Saturday's comeback, producing arguably his best stop of the month in its final few minutes, when he flew to his left and used a strong left paw to push Willy Boly's powerful shot around the post and preserve United's hard-earned 3-2 lead.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA

Our robust right-back who loves a tackle ploughed through plenty of them during August, as he cemented his reputation as one of the beautiful game's finest one-v-one defenders.

But Wan-Bissaka is offering more at the other end of the pitch these days, linking up well with Brazilian winger Antony in particular. It was Aaron's delivery to fellow back-four member Raphael Varane that enabled United to finally break the deadlock against Wolves and therefore get the season off to a winning start.

The no.29 played the full 90 minutes of that game and Saturday's victory over Forest and on both occasions, United fans voted him into the top three for our Man of the Match before he was beaten to the award by Onana and Fernandes respectively.

Wan-Bissaka was only denied a complete set of full outings when a booking at Tottenham prompted his protective substitution by Ten Hag in the second half.
