Reds among Euro 2024 qualifying top scorers
Several Manchester United players have been among the goals for their respective nations during the qualifying campaign for next summer’s UEFA European Championship.
Three members of Erik ten Hag’s side feature on an 11-strong list of goal-getters to have found the target four or more times, with the schedule at just over the midway point for the majority of the competing countries.
Rasmus Hojlund (Denmark) and Scott McTominay (Scotland) have managed six each, with only former Reds striker Romelu Lukaku notching more often than the pair, as an eight-time scorer for Belgium across their five games to date.
Hojlund got off to a blistering start with a hat-trick in Denmark's opening fixture against Finland back in March, before adding two more in a meeting with Kazakhstan later that month. Our no.11 has also netted away to Slovenia.
Back-to-back braces in wins for Scotland – over Cyprus and then Spain – also saw McTominay in the March headlines for his heroic efforts. The United midfielder has since continued to find the net in the colours of his nation, scoring against Georgia, in June, and in the return match with Cyprus during September's break.
Both will be hoping to add to their totals during important qualification contests over the coming week or so, as will Bruno Fernandes, who has also been in prolific touch in the competition.
Portugal have been comfortably the highest scorers in qualifying so far, netting 24 times (seven better than next-best Switzerland with 17), and Bruno has chipped in with four of those.
Our no.8 has also teed up another five goals for his compatriots, making him the joint-leader in the assists column, alongside Netherlands wing-back Denzel Dumfries.
No player has more goals and assists combined than Fernandes (nine, level with Lukaku), a tally that our Portuguese magnifico could next add to when Roberto Martinez's men play at home to Slovakia on Friday night.
Hojlund must wait until Saturday for Denmark’s next outing versus Kazakhstan, and, in the meantime, McTominay could edge ahead as our outright leading scoring in Euro 2024 qualifying tonight (19:45 BST kick-off), when Scotland travel to Spain, for a tough assignment.
Scott and co need at least a point from the Group A game in Seville to secure their place at next summer’s finals in Germany.
