United players await 2022 World Cup draw

Thursday 31 March 2022 10:55

All eyes will be on the 2022 World Cup draw this Friday, with the ceremony in Doha scheduled to start at 17:00 BST.

Twelve nations from Europe, including the reigning world champions France, have already qualified for Qatar and, while countries from the same confederation cannot normally be drawn in the same group, there will be an exception for the UEFA sides. There will be a limit of two European teams per group.

Three places in the tournament remain up for grabs, including the European Path A which currently involves two Manchester United players in Scott McTominay and Dylan Levitt. Scotland are still awaiting the date for their semi-final with Ukraine, with Wales set to play the victors after a 2-1 triumph over Austria.

The majority of the United men involved represent Pot 1 teams with the top seeds drawn out first and allocated their group by alphabetical position. Qatar, as hosts, have already been allocated Group A.

Among the Pot 1 nations are Brazil (Alex Telles and Fred), France (Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial), Spain (David De Gea) and Portugal (Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo). United Academy striker Alejandro Garnacho was in the latest Argentina squad but the 17-year-old featured for their Under-20s.

England are also among this pool and Gareth Southgate could name multiple Reds in his squad, including the likes of Dean HendersonLuke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Jesse LingardMarcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

Although the draw is taking place on Friday, all the Pot 4 sides are still to be confirmed. We know five of the countries already through but McTominay's Scotland and Levitt's Wales are still hoping to join them in Qatar. The UEFA Path A should, hopefully, be resolved in June.

The tournament kicks off on 21 November, with four matches played each day during the group stage. The final is being held on 18 December at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
