Fixtures 2021/22: United ready to welcome fans

Wednesday 16 June 2021 16:26

Manchester United's provisional Premier League fixture list for 2021/22, announced today, will no doubt have supporters scouring the schedule for the games they would most like to attend - if crowds continue to be admitted in football stadia and permitted to increase.

Measures imposed by the UK government to suppress the spread of the COVID-19 virus meant that the vast majority of matches in the last 15 months have been played behind closed doors.

Old Trafford staged only one match in the entire 2020/21 season that was attended by fans, on 18 May when a limited crowd of 10,000 witnessed United's 1-1 draw with Fulham - including that extraordinary goal by Edinson Cavani - as some restrictions started to be lifted.

The Reds will kick off next season with an absolute cracker in August.

The Reds' final league game, away to Wolves five days later, was played in front of 4,500 home supporters and there were an estimated 2,000 fans from each club at Stadion Miejski in Gdańsk, Poland when United faced Villarreal in the Europa League final.

Players and coaches alike commented on how positive it was to have crowds back for those last few games of the campaign, even if the numbers who passed through the turnstiles were significantly lower than 73,288 - the attendance figure for United's last game without restrictions, a brilliant 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Theatre of Dreams on 8 March 2020.

Fans will now be hoping to create a similar atmosphere when Leeds United visit Old Trafford for the opening 2021/22 Premier League fixture on the weekend of 14 or 15 August but any rise in capacity remains dependent on decisions made by the UK government.

Collette Roche, Chief Operating Officer at Manchester United, said: "Following the successful return of fans at limited numbers for the Fulham game at the end of last season, and continued trials of increased crowds at Wembley and other sporting events this summer, we look forward to the return of fans to Old Trafford at greater capacity as restrictions continue to lift."
