Ole's United squad is the Premier League's youngest

Tuesday 30 June 2020 12:39

Manchester United travel south to face Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Tuesday night (20:15 BST kick-off).

The reverse fixture at Old Trafford in November was notable, not just for a 3-1 victory, with all the goals from homegrown products (Andreas Pereira, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay), but because it provided the youngest team selected in the 2019/20 Premier League.

The side named, with an average of 24 years, was: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Williams; McTominay, Fred; James, Andreas, Rashford; Martial.

United are Premier League's youngest team

Data shows Ole's teams, on average, have been more youthful than all the other top-flight clubs this season.

We will have to wait until an hour before the game starts before discovering Ole's team on this occasion, but he has already pledged that his homegrown kids will continue to get opportunities as the matches come thick and fast during the finale to this most unusual of seasons.

United remain on course to field our youngest team, on average, in any Premier League season, with the club's faith in youth never more apparent.

Meanwhile, a report this week on planetfootball.com ranked the Premier League clubs in order of the average age of the full squad, weighted by playing time, with United again coming out on top.

Saturday's opponents at Old Trafford, Bournemouth, are in third place in the table, just below our Emirates FA Cup semi-final opponents Chelsea.

Mason Greenwood is the third-youngest player to appear in the Premier League this term, as he was only 17 when appearing off the bench against Chelsea in the season opener.

The only other 17-year-old to appear in 2019/20 is Tottenham striker Troy Parrott, while Liverpool's Harvey Elliott was 16 when handed his debut against Sheffield United. However, Parrott (five minutes) and Elliott (six) have only had limited minutes on the pitch in the league thus far in their fledgling careers. Greenwood, meanwhile, has racked up 24 appearances in the top flight during this campaign, and is the most-used substitute in the division.
