Solskjaer's team news for Southampton clash

Monday 01 February 2021 13:30

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he should have a full-strength squad to face Southampton at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Tuesday.

There were some doubts over Scott McTominay, after the midfielder exited Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the first half.

Our no.39 was struggling with stomach cramps at the Emirates Stadium, but the boss told us he is fine to feature as Ralph Hasenhuttl brings his injury-depleted squad to M16.

The Saints, who have lost their last three top-flight matches since beating champions Liverpool at the start of January, could have up to nine first-team players on the sidelines.

United, however, have the luxury of a fit and healthy complement – Victor Lindelof returned to the starting XI at Arsenal, while Eric Bailly was included on the bench – and Solskjaer says his main thought at the moment is rotation and keeping everyone fresh.

“Well apart from the wear and tear and, as you say, the quick turnaround, everyone should be available,” Ole told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“They’re not injured anyway. It’s just a matter of energy levels and seeing how they feel tomorrow. There are no new, fresh injuries anyway.”

United’s only other current injury concern is Phil Jones, who is yet to feature this season after undergoing an operation in the summer.

However, Solskjaer hopes the England international can come back into contention once he completes his recovery.

“Phil has been recovering from an injury, a knee operation he had, and he's working hard to be available again. So, he will be included on the [Premier League] list,” added Ole.

“Hopefully he’ll get his fitness back sooner, rather than later, and be able to play.”

SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS

The Saints are waiting for news on the fitness of midfielders Ibrahima Diallo and Oriol Romeu, plus forward Theo Walcott. The trio departed Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa with injury, adding to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s increasing squad depth woes.

Diallo and then James Ward-Prowse featured at right-back at the weekend, with regular in that position Kyle Walker-Peters out, although the former Spurs man could return on Tuesday. Defenders Jannik Vestergaard and Mohamed Salisu are still working their way back to fitness, while Michael Obafemi and Will Smallbone have long-term injuries.
