United announce side to face Partizan

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named his starting line-up for the Europa League Group L game at Partizan Belgrade.

James Garner makes his first start in midfield, while Ole sticks with three at the back - a system he employed in Sunday's draw against Liverpool.

Phil Jones is drafted in to replace Victor Lindelof in the backline, with Harry Maguire and Marcos Rojo keeping their places. Summer signing Maguire captains the side for the first time.

"Harry's a leader and we brought him to the club to take us one step further," the boss told MUTV. "So far, he's been brilliant and hopefully this captain's armband will help him maybe become a bigger leader as he's been excellent since he came."

Birkenhead-born James Garner has been outstanding for the Under-23s.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams will be asked to provide the width as attacking full-backs.

Garner, who has added goals to his game this term and been in magnificent form for the Under-23s, has only had a few seconds of first-team experience - as a late substitute at Crystal Palace last February.

However, he starts in midfield with another homegrown talent, Scott McTominay, and Juan Mata. Jesse Lingard, who is back from injury, looks set to push forward to support Anthony Martial. The Frenchman is in the XI for the first time since the Premier League game against Crystal Palace on 24 August.

"He's been excellent," said Ole of Garner. "He's been waiting for his chance and we felt tonight, with the experience he has around him, will be a good start for him. I think he's got more or less 300 caps out there next to him. I don’t think he's ever played with so much experience around him. He's an exciting player."

There is plenty of ammunition on the bench, with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James waiting on the wings after their exertions at Old Trafford last weekend.

United: Romero; Jones, Maguire, Rojo; Wan-Bissaka, McTominay, Garner, Mata, Williams; Lingard, Martial.

Substitutes: Grant, Lindelof, Andreas, Fred, James, Greenwood, Rashford.
