Ten Hag explains United side to face Brighton

Thursday 04 May 2023 19:20

The Manchester United side which will face Brighton and Hove Albion has been confirmed.

Erik ten Hag's side will move to within six points of cementing a Champions League place for next season with victory, although a tough test is expected against a Seagulls side which will still be smarting after losing the Emirates FA Cup semi-final at Wembley 11 days ago.

Roberto De Zerbi's men are also motivated by the chance to qualify for Europe for the very first time. They currently sit eighth in the Premier League table but will overtake Aston Villa and Tottenham if they win at the Amex Stadium.

Ten Hag has made four changes to the side which beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag takes a look around the Amex Stadium.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka comes in for Tyrell Malacia, with Diogo Dalot presumably shifting across to left-back, while there are two alterations in midfield too.

Brazilian pair Fred and Antony start in place of Christian Eriksen and Marcel Sabitzer.

With Jadon Sancho also starting on the bench, it looks as though Marcus Rashford will be on the wing with Anthony Martial moved into the team and playing up front.

“Yeah, both," Erik replied when Sky Sports' Kelly Cates asked him whether the alterations were due to tactical or physical reasons.

“Tactically, sure. But also load. Sunday [we have] another game and we already have a lot of games in the bank, so you want to keep everyone fit. Tough weeks are coming, with six games to go and then a cup final. So yeah, we want to keep everyone on board.

“For instance, Fred, I think it's a perfect game for him,” he added, to MUTV. “He did it quite well when he came in, in that semi-final. So we expect more or less the same from him today. He can be a potent part [of the team].”

The Seagulls have also made four changes, with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Felipe Caicedo back in the side after being rested for the 6-0 victory over Wolves. Joel Veltman is injured, while Pascal Gross, who has scored six times against United previously, is not in the squad.
