United v City: Essential information

Manchester United are aiming to make it two wins from two against our neighbours in 2019/20, when we face them in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The Reds beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in December, thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Exactly a month on and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping for a similarly successful evening when we host Pep Guardiola’s men in the semi-final first leg.

Ahead of the game, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the visit of City…

SEMI-FINAL DETAILS

The semi-finals of the Carabao Cup are played over two legs, with the first game against City taking place on Tuesday and the second meeting set for Wednesday 29 January. The away goals rule is not in operation in the tournament and, should the tie finish level after 180 minutes, the winner will be determined via a penalty shootout. In the Carabao Cup, extra time only takes place in the final of the competition. VAR will also be in operation at Old Trafford and at the Etihad, having not been used in the previous rounds against Rochdale, Chelsea and Colchester United.

Ole won't reveal if Romero will face City

The manager was twice asked whether Sergio Romero will face City on Tuesday, but he was giving nothing away...

WHO'S THE REFEREE?

Mike Dean will oversee proceedings on Tuesday. The 51-year-old has taken charge of three United matches this season, the most recent being December’s 2-0 victory over Burnley. Dean was actually the referee the last time we played City in the League Cup, when Juan Mata’s strike proved to be the only goal of the game in October 2016. The Merseysider will be assisted by Ian Hussin and Darren Cann at Old Trafford, while Lee Mason is set to be fourth official on the night. Kevin Friend is operating VAR from Stockley Park for this game, with Stephen Child assisting him.
What the boss said
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says

“I think form goes out the window when we play each other. You go on the local-derby adrenaline and the atmosphere, that’s going to be important.”

ELSEWHERE IN THE CUP

At this stage of the tournament there is, of course, only one other tie. Leicester City host Aston Villa on Wednesday, with the reverse fixture scheduled for Tuesday 28 January. That means by the time we play City again in three weeks, both sides will know who lies in wait in the final at Wembley.
