United v Leicester: Can the Reds extend a perfect run?

Friday 13 October 2023 12:00

Manchester United Women’s 2023/24 league campaign has started in promising fashion with four points from the opening two games.

A last-gasp 2-1 win over an improving Aston Villa side on the opening day preceded a 2-2 draw with fellow title hopefuls Arsenal in our first home game last Friday, when the Reds were only denied all three points by a stunning injury-time equaliser.

Next up is the visit of Leicester City to Leigh Sports Village at lunchtime on Sunday and to mark the occasion, another of our popular digital collectibles has been created. To find out how to claim yours for free, read the information further down this page - or head to collectibles.manutd.com.

Fans in the UK and Ireland can watch Sunday's game live on MUTV, ManUtd.com and the United App, and it promises to be a cracker given the Foxes top the early table with two wins from two.

The Reds can take heart from the thrilling 1-1 draw in the team’s maiden Champions League experience on Tuesday, against two-time finalists Paris Saint-Germain. And Marc Skinner’s side can take further confidence from the club's superb WSL record against Leicester.

Since reforming in 2018/19, United Women have won all six league clashes with the East Midlands outfit by an overwhelming aggregate of 26 goals to three, with several members of the current squad playing starring roles in those triumphs.

Both clubs were in the Women’s Championship when the sides first met four-and-a-half years ago and the two league games were one-sided in the Reds’ favour.

Ella Toone bagged a remarkable four goals in a 7-0 away win in February 2019, with Kirsty Hanson and Alex Greenwood also on the scoresheet.

And less than a month later, Toone and Hanson scored again in the return fixture, adding to a double from Jess Sigsworth and strikes from Mollie Green and the emerging Lauren James in a 6-1 victory.

The Reds were, of course, promoted as champions at the end of that campaign, meaning we didn’t meet the Foxes again in the league until they joined us in the top flight three seasons later.

Toone was on target once more in a game staged at King Power Stadium in September 2021, firing a first-half rocket before maiden goals for the club by substitutes Maria Thorisdottir and Martha Thomas ensured it finished 3-1.

Current club captain Kate Zelem was the talk of the town when Leicester visited Leigh Sports Village in March 2022, netting two goals directly from corners in the second half to wrap up a comfortable 4-0 victory.

A return to King Power Stadium in October last year resulted in the closest game to date, with only Nikita Parris’ first-half header separating the sides.

But the Foxes could not contain Skinner’s side in the reverse fixture in March this year, when it was Alessia Russo’s turn to enter the spotlight with a well-taken hat-trick. Leah Galton and Lucia Garcia also netted in a resounding 4-1 win.

While the Reds can take heart from the previous record, Skinner will be taking nothing for granted on Sunday, particularly after Leicester’s opening wins over Bristol City and Everton.

The action begins at 12:00 BST. Watch the game live on MUTV (UK and Ireland audiences only, due to broadcasting restrictions) or buy tickets online for the Leigh Sports Village clash.
