On Thursday morning (2 April), staff and players from Manchester United Women visited Manchesterplatz to pay respects to those who lost their lives following the Munich Air Disaster on 6 February 1958.

The lives of 23 people were claimed in the disaster, including eight United players and three club officials, as the team's aircraft crashed on its third attempt to take off.

On Thursday morning, the staff and players of Manchester United Women heard about the disaster and listened to the poignant folk song, The Flowers of Manchester, alongside representatives from Bayern Munich and both clubs' supporters.

Matt Johnson, director of women's football, said: “The Munich Air Disaster is an important moment in history for Manchester United and it was important that we took the time while in Munich to pay our respects to the 23 people who died in February 1958.

“It was a very powerful feeling to come to the site and we thank the members of Bayern Munich who joined us this morning, alongside our supporters and Red Docs of Munich.”

Karin Danner, formerly the long-serving general manager of FC Bayern women's football and, today, a legend of the German club said: “I am very proud to be here today representing FC Bayern at this special moment.

“FC Bayern stands for solidarity and respect. The fact that, over the decades, such a special relationship with Manchester United has developed through our shared remembrance is a wonderful sign that football is not always just about rivalry – it brings people together.”
