Passion for Manchester United is a pre-requisite when it comes to being a supporter of the club.

But if the same unwavering love for the club is also shared by its managers and players, the resulting mix can be remarkably powerful.

In a week when we've been celebrating what it means to support United, through our 'U-N-I-T-E-D' campaign, we've picked out these key quotes from some great men who have graced the Old Trafford dressing room, either in boots or as bosses.

Sir Matt Busby says

“I never wanted Manchester United to be second to anybody. Only the best would be good enough.”

Sir Alex Ferguson says

“I’m privileged to have followed Sir Matt because all you have to do is to try and maintain the standards that he set so many years ago.”

Bryan Robson says

"Playing at Manchester United carries great responsibility, but you have to rise to the challenge."

Ryan Giggs says

"My philosophy is a Manchester United philosophy. Passion, speed, tempo, bravery, imagination. Work hard but most of all enjoy it. If you enjoy it, you can express yourself more."

Eric Cantona says

"I was forever in search of a club like Manchester United. United is great and difficult at the same time. Great because we always have a chance of winning something. Difficult on that account, because we always have to win."

Sir Matt Busby says

“Manchester is my Heaven.”

Roy Keane says

"The days I had at United were probably the best days of my life. They were absolutely fantastic lads and we were winning trophies.”

Gary Neville says

"When you first walk into that ground at the age of five or ten, you fall in love with that team running out in that red shirt, in that great stadium. That was what drew you to the club and made you think: 'Wow, that's got me.' And it's an addiction you have for life."

Nemanja Vidic says

"When you play for United, you have proof that you are a good player. Manchester United is an institution. Every one of us is very happy we have a chance to play at Old Trafford. That is a privilege, I know that."

Robin van Persie says

"I'm a lover of football. Manchester United breathe football. I always listen to the little boy inside of me in these situations – when you have to make the harder decisions in life. What does he want? That boy was screaming for Man United."

Sir Matt Busby says

“At Manchester United we strive for perfection and if we fail we might just have to settle for excellence.”
