Milestone for Marcus as he hits our 10,000th goal

Saturday 26 September 2020 14:54

Marcus Rashford's strike against Brighton & Hove Albion was the 10,000th goal in Manchester United's history.

The 20-times champions of England started the season on 9,994 goals, having added 112 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019/20, with Anthony Martial leading the way by supplying a career-best 23.

Following Donny van de Beek's debut effort against Crystal Palace, three goals away at Luton Town on Tuesday and Rashford's wonder-goal to make it 2-1 during in our dramatic 3-2 win at Brighton became the one that clinched the milestone.

Solskjaer praises Bruno's steely mindset

"Bruno is very strong mentally and that’s a big part of being a penalty taker," says Ole in our interview...

Of course, United was formed as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, and not all records have been kept since that date. So the reality is that we probably passed the real 10,000th goal some years ago.

Our current recorded tally began in 1886, with two Jack Doughty goals in a 2-2 draw against Fleetwood Rangers in the FA Cup.

We had to wait until 1907 to reach 1,000, but the good news since is that our scoring rates seem to be getting faster as time progresses – no doubt helped by the ever-increasing number of games and competitions in the football calendar.
We went from 8,000 to 9,000 goals in less than nine years between 2001 and 2010, and strikes by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Wayne Rooney versus Leeds United and West Ham United, respectively.

Last season saw us become the first Premier League side in the rebranded division's 28-year history to reach 2,000 goals, when Scott McTominay fired home the opener in a 3-1 win at Norwich City. But 2020/21 has seen us hit the monstrous number 10,000 across all competitions.
Here's a full rundown of how we reached the milestones building up to the 10,000-mark...
