Loan Watch: Four United players in action

Monday 02 September 2019 11:35

There was a mixed bag of results at the weekend for the various Manchester United first-team and Academy players who are currently on loan around England and Europe.

Young goalkeeper Dean Henderson made his fourth start of the season with Premier League club Sheffield United, who earned a fine 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Flourishing Blues striker Tammy Abraham scored twice for the hosts in the first half, before Henderson produced a top save to prevent the Englishman from completing his hat-trick after the break. The Blades then restored parity thanks to a Callum Robinson strike and Kurt Zouma own goal.

After completing a loan move to AS Roma on Friday, Chris Smalling was named on the bench for his new club’s local derby against Lazio - which resulted in a 1-1 draw at the Olimpico on Sunday, after goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Luis Alberto. The centre-back will presumably make his debut after the international break, when Roma host Sassuolo at home on 15 September.

Smalling posted this message to supporters, via his official Twitter account, at the weekend: "Manchester – the club, the people, the city, has always held a special place in my heart but I still have as much desire to play regular first-team football as I did when I joined the club over 9 years ago.

“AS Roma is a fantastic club, with a lot of history and I’m relishing the new challenge they have offered me. I’m excited to experience a new league, experience the culture and get really stuck in to support Roma’s domestic and European ambitions.

"To all the staff, players and fans at @ManUtd, the journey so far has been a pleasure. Wishing you the best of luck for the season."

Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez is also yet to appear for his new loan club in Italy, Internazionale, after the Chile international was an unused substitute during their 2-1 win over Cagliari on Sunday. Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring at Sardegna Arena and Joao Pedro equalised for the home side, before former United striker Romelu Lukaku scored the winning goal from the penalty spot.

Aidan Barlow scored his first goal for Tromso as they drew 2-2 with Haugesund in the Norwegian Tippeligaen, the division which is currently topped by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's former club Molde.

Academy goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara kept a clean sheet as Burton Albion registered a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers in League One, with Lucas Akins and Ryan Edwards netting for the Brewers. Our young prospect made two notable saves in the match, to deny Jonson Clarke-Harris and Ollie Clarke.

George Tanner, our 19-year-old Academy defender, made his fourth appearance for Morecambe and completed a full match as they lost 3-1 away to Swindon Town in League Two. Eoin Doyle broke the deadlock and although Lewis Alessandra soon equalised, Jerry Yates restored the hosts' lead before Doyle's second strike rounded off the scoring, with all the goals coming inside the first 21 minutes.

Joel Pereira did not feature in goal for Hearts as he continues to recover from an injury.
