Mannion ‘gutted’ to miss 2023 World Cup
United Women's Aoife Mannion has posted a heartfelt message to her fellow Republic of Ireland internationals, after missing out on the chance to represent her country at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The Reds centre-back picked up an MCL injury towards the end of last season, ruling her out of our final two Women’s Super League games.
Despite working hard to recover, Aoife was unable to reach full fitness in time to be named in Vera Pauw’s squad.
“Congratulations to all of the girls named in the Ireland team for the World Cup in Australia,” Mannion wrote.
“It has been a joy to be involved in a couple of camps over the past few months and witness a bit of magic first hand.
“History makers - leading Ireland to our first World Cup.
“Can’t wait to be back in a green shirt on the pitch… for now, I will settle for wearing it over to Australia as a fan and following the girls around to support them from the stands. Good luck, girls.”
Fellow Reds defender Maria Thorisdottir showed her support in the replies, writing: “I know how much hard work you have put down to try and make it in time for the World Cup Aoife. You should be proud of yourself! You will come back stronger.”
Best of luck in your recovery, Aoife!
