Riviere and Miyazawa make Olympic squads

Wednesday 17 July 2024 09:30

Jayde Riviere and Hinata Miyazawa will be representing the Reds at this summer's Olympic Games in Paris.

The pair have been chosen for Canada and Japan respectively with the Games starting on 26 July.

Riviere, who has recently had a grassroots field in her home town named after her, was part of the squad who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and is ready to help the side retain their title.

After receiving her first international call-up in November 2017, the Canadian has been a regular fixture in the squad also featuring in two Women’s World Cups.

Our 23-year-old right-back took to social media to say: “Off we go! So excited to be heading back to a second Olympics. This year hasn’t been the easiest for me and to know all that hard work paid off is a blessing.”

After an incredible Women’s World Cup last summer for Japan, Hinata went home with the Golden Boot from the tournament.

This will be our midfielder’s first time at the Olympics and she is back to full fitness following an ankle fracture in December.

Miyazawa wrote on social media: “I have been selected as a member of the Paris Olympics. I was worried about being injured after last year’s World Cup, but I can stand on this stage with the support of many staff, officials and family.

“Don’t forget to have fun and work hard and turn your willingness and responsibility into power.”

When are the knockout stages?

The top two sides in each group as well as the two best ranking third place side will make it through to the knockout stages.

Unlike in the group stage, if a match is level at the end of normal playing time in the knockout stage, extra time is played (two periods of 15 minutes each) and followed, if necessary, by a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.

The quarter-finals will be on Saturday 3 August (3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm).

Semi-finals are on Tuesday 6 August (6pm, 9pm) and the bronze medal game on Friday 9 August (3pm kick-off).

The gold medal match will take place on Saturday 10 August at 5pm.
