Skinner: All we’ve made is a good start

Sunday 23 October 2022 11:36

Manchester United Women’s head coach Marc Skinner has congratulated his side on a perfect start to the WSL season, but also acknowledged that there's still plenty of work to be done, as we now look to build on a positive beginning to the new campaign.

Skinner’s side head to the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon to take on Leicester City (15:00 BST), where we can make it four wins from four in the league.

United currently sit top of the pile on goal difference, ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea, following three victories at the start of the campaign.

The head coach has praised his team’s efforts so far, while also reaffirming that the onus is on his side to keep gathering momentum, including this weekend in the East Midlands.

Skinner: No winning team is nice all of the time

Ahead of Sunday's WSL clash away to Leicester, Marc Skinner says he wants his team to play on the edge...

“It’s an excellent start, we’ve scored 10 goals, had lots of different goal scorers and kept three clean sheets,” Skinner said in his pre-match interview with club media.

“But you win nothing, all it is, is a good start. We’ve got lots of work to do and it starts again this weekend, and we have to be in a great mind-space to be ready for this game against Leicester.”
Carrying on that focus and the professional attitude displayed in our three WSL wins over Reading, West Ham and Brighton will be key again on Sunday, says Skinner, as we prepare to take on the side currently at the foot of the table, in Leicester.

“No way we’ll be complacent," said the United Women boss. "In our environment, we’ll make sure we seek out any complacency, we’ve got to go and maximise the way we play in the game.

“We have to find different solutions to what Leicester throw. They’re tactically adept to change and adapt, and Lydia [Bedford] has done a great job [in the] last year.

“They haven’t got the results they want but some of their performances, I’m sure they’re trying to piece that together.

“We know what threat they’re going to provide, and we have to take that absolutely seriously. So, we’re going to be ready for this weekend, we’re going to make sure we maximise the game as much as we possibly can and try and take the points.”

The Reds will be hoping to extend our winning start to the new WSL season when we make the trip to the East Midlands.

The trip to the Midlands is the first of three games in eight days for United, as our action-packed schedule ramps up a gear.

United travel to Durham in the League Cup on Wednesday before a visit to Everton in the WSL next weekend, and Skinner believes that three big challenges on the road this week will give his squad an opportunity to display their abilities.

“We’ve got three really tough challenges in such a short space of time that we have got to be ready and so the players will be utilised, and we’ll try and match their qualities together," he said.

“It’s a great chance for them to show their qualities. When you have a bigger squad, people want to play more often, so I’m really going to ask my players to maximise their potential in each game and show their qualities to show if they can play in each game going forwards.”
