Skinner: It's two points dropped
Marc Skinner was disappointed that Manchester United Women did not execute our chances in the 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.
A late Rachel Williams strike secured the point at the Broadfield Stadium in a frustrating game that saw United struggle to put away their chances.
After Brighton went ahead in the first half, it was not until the 78th minute that Ella Toone managed to equalise for the Reds, with her first club goal in almost a year.
The Seagulls took the lead once again with one minute of normal time remaining and looked to have clinched three points, but Rachel Williams was once again there to save the day in injury time.
Skinner shared his thoughts to the press following the final whistle, and you can read his responses below...
Skinner: We need to take our chances
Marc assesses United Women's 2-2 draw against Brighton...
On overall thoughts of the game…
"We didn’t execute our chances in the final third enough. We created enough chances to win the game and we didn’t do that. You get hurt when you don’t do that. We conceded two poor goals from our point and that is something we have to keep working on. We have to win that game and so when we don’t take those chances, this is what happens.
"It’s hard because we have to win that game. That is two points dropped from our perspective. I want to credit Brighton because they came and fought us at their home ground. We have to finish better. We created too many chances to not come away with the win. I want us to be calmer, more collective. We will keep doing it. I want to see an improvement in that area."
On Ella Toone…
"Ella is a key player for us regardless but I think Tooney needs to be in those positions more. She needs to strike effectively. She scores that goal because she caresses the ball in, she doesn’t try to overhit it and it’s that detail that takes her beyond Baggers [Sophie Baggaley] in goal. There is no problem [with Ella]. Everyone makes out that she hasn’t scored in this long but class is permanent. She will keep showing that and she will keep turning up for us."
On the travelling fans…
"Credit to all of them. It’s a 6.45pm kick-off in the farthest place we go and they were wonderful. Thank you to all of them tonight because even at the end when we need them most they are still cheering us on. Every away fixture feels like a home one and that’s credit to them. I am sorry we couldn’t get them the three points tonight."
On preparing for the next game against Everton in the League Cup…
"We have a midweek game and I want a reaction. We are creating loads of chances and we don’t finish them. I now want to make sure that I take my forwards and put them in positions where we are finishing the game. This game we should have scored five or six. The quality of the chances we created have to be put away and I am going to make sure that I own that and I am going to make sure that the players are better at that. "
