Skinner: She took it in her stride!

Marc Skinner piled praise on his Manchester United Women's side, as we bounced back from Saturday’s WSL defeat to Aston Villa and produced a great performance to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Melvine Malard and Fridolina Rolfo were the goalscorers, scoring either side of Olga Carmona's wonderful effort for the visitors.

But Skinner was keen to highlight the contributions of a more unsung player, in his post-match press conference.

Jayde Riviere may have won the official Player of the Match award, but the boss felt that Safia Middleton-Patel was the star on the night, after the 21-year-old was thrust into the limelight in the absence of Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

The Wales international made her first appearance since her club debut, against Newcastle United in the League Cup, last December.

Skinner: We've made history again

Marc Skinner names his Player of the Match before congratulating his team on making more history at Old Trafford...

Skinner was suitably impressed: “When I found out Phallon wasn't going to start the game, I said I believed in her. I wanted Safia to be herself. She is a good footballer so she calms the build-up.

"She took it in her stride. I'm honestly really proud of her.

Skinner pointed out that Middleton-Patel may have been nervous before the game but smiled as he told the press that experienced striker Rachel Williams led some star jumps to help shake out some energy.

"She will always be part of the history in our first Champions League game at Old Trafford," he added. "She deserves that romantic part, because that's lovely.

He went on to express his thoughts on the team’s performance as the game produced some stunning goals, including Malard's superb individual run and finish.

“I thought all three goals were lovely in different ways," he said.

"Mal's individualism down the side to break in the box and finish [and] Carmona's top-corner screamer is fantastic.

“But then the team goal [for Rolfo's header], I think it sums up [the performance].”

Goals from Malard and Rolfo clinch a historic win at Old Trafford and maintain our perfect league-phase record.

With three wins in our opening three Champions League games, we now sit in third position and inside the automatic qualifying spots at the halfway stage.

“If you'd have said that, I have three out of three going into that, and PSG haven’t had a point. I'd have thought you were mad!” said Skinner.

“There'll be losses, I'm sure. But I think to start the way we have puts us in a really strong position where we want to be, and it also helps potential recruitment in the winter window too, because hopefully, if we can get another three points, that might be enough to see us through.

“To see our names up there with those fantastic teams is a real privilege right now, and something hopefully we can keep up with.”
