Rashford apologises for red card

The 20-year-old striker was sent off in the 71st minute for squaring up to Phil Bardsley aggressively, just ten minutes after coming on as a substitute for Alexis Sanchez. The incident began when Bardsley sent Rashford tumbling to the ground, just beyond the byline as the ball ran out of play.

The angry reaction from Marcus prompted referee Jon Moss to dismiss him, while Bardsley earned a booking for his part in the flashpoint.

Rashford later tweeted: "Emotions got the better of me, I shouldn’t have reacted like that. Sorry to everyone at the club and all the fans. #MUFC."

When asked about the incident in his post-match press conference, United manager Jose Mourinho said: "It was the experience of Bardsley, with 20 years of football, against the impulse and the naivety of a guy that has been in top football for three years but is still a young kid. 

"Was it harsh? I don't know. It could have been a yellow card for both and keep going maybe. But I cannot say."

If Rashford has to serve a three-match suspension, he will be absent from the Premier League games away to Watford on 15 September and Wolves at home on 22 September, as well as the subsequent Carabao Cup tie against Derby County at Old Trafford on a date to be confirmed. However, he would be eligible to play in the opening UEFA Champions League group game against Young Boys in Switzerland.
