Greenwood out of England Under-21 squad

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been forced to withdraw from the England Under-21 squad.

The 18-year-old, who made his debut at that level against Turkey last month, had been selected for the upcoming games against Slovenia and Austria.

He came on as a second-half substitute in the Reds' 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday but has pulled out of coach Aidy Boothroyd's group due to a back problem.

Mason Greenwood scored his first senior United goal in the win over Astana.

The teenager scored his first senior goals in the recent matches at Old Trafford against Astana, in the Europa League, and Rochdale, in the Carabao Cup.

He will remain at the Aon Training Complex in advance of the Reds' next outing, against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday 20 October.

United do still have representation in some of the younger England squads.

Angel Gomes and Brandon Williams are in the Under-20 party for matches against Italy (Thursday) and Czech Republic (Monday), while James Garner is with the Under-19s for the International Marbella Cup.

Teden Mengi has three fixtures with the Under-18s to look forward to, against Poland, Slovakia and Austria, and his fellow centre-back, Will Fish, also has a trio of matches with the Under-17s, with two games against Germany and another with Spain.

Marcus Rashford applauds the fans following England's victory over Kosovo.

Of course, the Reds have two players in the senior Three Lions squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers on the road against Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford are in Gareth Southgate's plans for the group games.
