Mason Greenwood

Greenwood: I'm back in the zone

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was naturally thrilled with his headed winner against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

After Academy graduates Danny Welbeck and Marcus Rashford had scored once for either side, it was up to another homegrown United youngster to settle the contest at the Theatre of Dreams.

With eight minutes remaining of normal time, Greenwood reacted quickly when Paul Pogba's volley bounced up off the ground and headed in the match-winning goal, to secure three vital Premier League points for the Reds against the Seagulls.

When speaking to MUTV and BT Sport in his post-match interviews, our no. 11 was, of course, very happy with the result.

"It was very important," he said. "We played well, defended well and obviously to get the winner means a lot to me."

Greenwood's goal was his first in the Premier League since his half-volley against West Ham United in December.

"Obviously, it’s a confidence booster," Mason emphasised.

"I know I haven’t scored as many in the league but I scored a header tonight, something I’ve been working on for a long time behind the scenes but we’re all good with the win."

In addition, the clincher was his first headed goal for United, which pleased Greenwood greatly following months of training-ground graft.

"It was one of my weaknesses I’d say," he admitted, when modestly discussing his heading abilities post-match.

"To be a striker and an attacker you have got to be able to do it all and that was one area where I was weak on. With practise and help from the coaching staff, it’s obviously strengthened now and I’m bringing it on to the pitch."

This was the second match in a row where our promising forward has found the back of the net. The 19-year-old also scored the equaliser in our Emirates FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Leicester City in our last match prior to our win over the Seagulls.

"Yeah, I’m getting back into the zone, really," he said.

"It’s somewhere I wanted to be earlier in the season but it’s come now. I’ve kept my head down and just concentrated, worked in training and I’m happy it’s coming on to the pitch now."

United now have eight Premier League matches remaining, with at least two important games in Europe, and Mason is looking forward to the final straight of the campaign.

"Coming back after the international break, it’s always good to get a win and obviously it’s a spring in our step before the Europa League. I’m sure we’ll do well in that as well."
