Under-21s: Reds head to Molineux for trophy tie

Tuesday 22 November 2022 09:59

Manchester United's Papa Johns Trophy campaign continues this evening when our Under-21s take on a Wolverhampton Wanderers team in the same age group.

This second-round tie at Molineux is a knockout affair and follows the Reds' success in the group stage, when the senior sides of three EFL clubs provided the opposition.

Kick-off is at 19:00 GMT and you will be able to find the team news as well as half-time and full-time updates in the United App.

The game will not be shown live on MUTV due to broadcasting rules, but match highlights will be available to view in our app and on ManUtd.com from Wednesday morning.

The first team might be on hiatus, but our Under-21s will be in Papa Johns Trophy action next week.

Our young Reds have gained some invaluable experience in the competition so far. Away wins over League Two clubs Carlisle United and Barrow, both of which ended 2-1, secured a place in the second round with a game to spare.

That final group fixture was an entertaining 2-2 draw away to League One side Fleetwood Town, with the hosts securing the extra point on penalties.

Meanwhile, Wolves reached the last 32 by finishing second in their group with six points from three matches.
The two clubs have already met at Under-21 level this season, when the Reds won 3-2 in an action-packed Premier League 2 contest at Carrington.

United twice came from behind, with equalisers from Joe Hugill and Shola Shoretire, before an 88th-minute winner from Marc Jurado settled the encounter in our favour.

Shoretire was also on the scoresheet in our previous Papa Johns Trophy tie, netting an injury-time equaliser at Fleetwood where Charlie McNeill had opened the scoring from the penalty spot.

If the score is level after 90 minutes tonight, the tie will be decided by a penalty shootout.

The winners will go into the third-round draw which, like the first two stages, will be regionalised.
