Match Rewind: this season's best home games

Friday 17 April 2020 12:00

Our 'Match Rewind' series is building up to another Saturday-night special, as we continue to fill your homes with fantastic football from the Manchester United archives.

Fans have been voting in their droves throughout the last few weeks, as, every other day, we ask you to choose between four matches, with the winner being shown in full, for free, on our Official App and the ManUtd.com homepage.

Our latest theme is great Premier League home wins from the current 2019/20 season which, as we all know, is currently on an indefinite hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, the lads have already produced some bona-fide crackers under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, and your four voting options are no exception...

UNITED 4 CHELSEA 0 (11 August 2019)

What a way to kick off the Norwegian's first full season in charge. A packed house at Old Trafford, top-class opposition and an imperious United performance. In fairness, Frank Lampard's Blues more than contributed to the contest, despite the final scoreline, and could count themselves unlucky to be behind at the break due to a Marcus Rashford penalty.

Relive all the glory of Marcus's cool finish from Paul Pogba's exquisite pass, again and again...

But there was no denying the Reds' raw power on the counter-attack. Once Anthony Martial made it two, the floodgates opened. Rashford sprung onto Paul Pogba's aerial through ball minutes after the Frenchman's strike to fire home number three, and then there was a dream debut goal for new signing Daniel James. A perfect day in M16.

UNITED 4 NEWCASTLE 1 (26 December 2019)

The Magpies had already got the better of United at St James' Park earlier in the campaign, and they looked like doing it again at Old Trafford when Matty Longstaff popped up to drive them ahead in the 17th minute. But this was a different United. With Martial, Rashford and Greenwood all in the starting XI, it just took the Reds a while to recalibrate after the shock of the early goal, but once we did, Newcastle were very quickly rammed against the ropes.
First, Andreas Pereira teed up Martial for the equaliser, and then Mason Greenwood thrashed a sumptuous drive in off the bar following a loose pass in the Newcastle defence. Aaron Wan-Bissaka's delicious cross invited Rashford to power home at the back post just a few minutes before half-time, and United were suddenly in cruise control, and threatening to score every time we bounded forward. After the break, there was another for the cool Martial, and the final scoreline could have been much more destructive had Solskjaer's men pressed on. Instead, we chose to reserve energy, given the relentless Christmas and New Year scheduling, but for 20-30 minutes or so, this was an attacking display of real high quality.

UNITED 3 WATFORD 0 (23 February 2020)

This match may go down as the day that Bruno Fernandes truly installed himself within the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful. United made a somewhat awkward start to the match, and should have gone behind after an early mix-up between Harry Maguire and Nemanja Matic let Troy Deeney in, only for a great tackle from Luke Shaw to save the day.

See how Fernandes scored his penalty, assisted Martial, crossed for Maguire and set up Greenwood against Watford...

But when Fernandes won and coolly converted a penalty just before the break, United slowly began to turn on the style. Watford were unfortunate not to have an equaliser in the second half, when VAR rightly ruled out a Deeney effort due to a handball in the build-up, but sublime efforts from Martial and Greenwood soon put the game out of reach for the Hornets. Through it all, Fernandes was masterful –linking the play and bringing his team-mates to life with endless zeal. Vote for this if you want to see his inspirational impact on United beginning to take shape.

UNITED 2 CITY 0 (8 March 2020)

To date, this is Old Trafford's last match, and one that is becoming an increasingly emotional memory for many Reds who were there on the day. It was a dramatic contest, with chances for both sides, but ultimately, it was a familiar story: Solskjaer's United beating Pep Guardiola's City for the third time in four meetings this season.

The Blues started strongly, but United whirred into life after the half-hour mark. When Fernandes earned a free-kick and caught the City defence sleeping with a clever, chipped ball over Martial's shoulder, the Frenchman fired past Ederson to give us the lead. Sergio Aguero had a goal ruled out for offside in the second period, but City struggled to break down our stubborn defence, and United were always a threat on the break. In the dying moments, as Ederson tried to launch a final City attack, Scott McTominay raced onto the Brazilian's loose throw-out and calmly dispatched the ball home from an improbable 40 yards out. That sent Old Trafford wild, and completed a first league double over our cross-town rivals since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
