Match Rewind: Our last Premier League win!

Wednesday 17 June 2020 11:30

With Manchester United's first match in over three months just two days away, we're bringing you the final 'Match Rewind' of the break.

And where else to turn but the Reds' last Premier League outing to date, and our most recent appearance at Old Trafford?

Throughout the lockdown, we've been reaching into the club's vast archives of golden games from years gone by, to keep you supplied with a steady stream of 'live' football.

But with attention quickly returning to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team, and the resumption of the 2019/20 campaign, it's time to bring things squarely up to date.

Sunday 8 March 2020 might feel a lifetime ago, but maybe that's because our 2-0 win over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City very quickly took on its own 'classic' feel, even before the season was halted.

It was our third derby victory over the Blues this season, and arguably the pick of the bunch.

And what better way to get in the mood for Friday's big clash with Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur than by reliving our last triumph over one of our biggest rivals?

It's a performance that's well worth revisiting.
The Reds were sensational for the final 20 minutes of the first half that day, and probably deserved a more emphatic lead than 1-0.

Our opening goal arrived from a free-kick, taken quickly by Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese's smart thinking fed a chipped aerial pass to Anthony Martial, whose volley was too hot for City goalkeeper Ederson to handle.

Shortly after, United should have had a penalty, when Fred was tripped by Otamendi. Instead, the Brazilian was harshly booked by referee Mike Dean.

McTominay goal was a great Stretford End moment

Season ticket holder Joe Ganley explains the impact of Scott's stunning strike on United's fans.

In the second period, much as they had done in our December league meeting, City bounced back in an attempt to restore parity.

But, just as at the Etihad, they would leave the pitch frustrated.

In the dying moments, Ederson committed his third big blunder of the contest – his second being a lax first touch that almost granted Martial a tap-in from a yard out.

His loose throw-out was a desperate effort to get a final City attack started before the final whistle, but instead he found the alert and onrushing Scott McTominay.

What happened next is already the stuff of Manchester derby legend, just months later.

It sent Old Trafford wild, and saw almost the entire team celebrating in euphoric style before the Stretford End, with the new king of M16, Odion Ighalo, particularly prominent.

It was a match that had almost everything you'd want as a Red: our neighbours vanquished, one of the all-time great derby goals, and the Old Trafford crowd in roasting-hot form.

It's the perfect hors d'oeuvre to 2019/20's blockbuster resumption on Friday. Don't miss out!
