Turner receives Lionesses call-up

Monday 19 February 2024 11:29

Manchester United defender Millie Turner has been called up to the England Lionesses squad for the upcoming internationals.

Turner was not initially among the 23 players selected by Sarina Wiegman but, following the withdrawal of Arsenal defender Leah Williamson, our 27-year-old centre-back was added to the group on Sunday.

United's Ella Toone, Mary Earps, Maya Le Tissier and Grace Clinton (on loan at Tottenham) were already in the squad for the upcoming friendlies against Austria and Italy.

The date, kick-off time and broadcast information for the Reds’ tie at Brighton have been released.

Turner has been a key part of the Reds' defence this season and was involved in the Lionesses squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures against Scotland and the Netherlands in November.

Our no.21 has been almost ever-present in our backline since returning from a long absence at the start of the 2022/23 season.

Millie helped the Reds keep more clean sheets than any other Women's Super League side last term, and has also scored some important goals for United along the way.

England take on Austria on Friday 23 February at 19:45 GMT, before facing Italy on Tuesday 27 February, at 17:00 GMT.

As well as the aforementioned Lionesses, Republic of Ireland international Aoife Mannion has also been called up by her country, for the first time since April 2023.

The defender overcame injury to make her first appearance for the Reds since pre-season, in our Adobe Women's FA Cup victory at Southampton on Sunday 11 February.

Congratulations to you both, Millie and Aoife!
