It may have been disappointing that the Old Trafford faithful could not pay its proper respects to late Manchester United great Nobby Stiles on Sunday but he was in everybody's thoughts as the Reds took on Arsenal.

A minute's silence was observed before kick-off and it is likely many people watching at home, rather than in the ground, took a moment to pause to reflect on the impact the former midfielder had on their lives as a United supporter.

Instead, it was left to the few present to honour the silent tribute inside the stadium.

Fans left flowers and cards outside Old Trafford, close to where a large picture of Nobby is situated outside the East Stand.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also laid a wreath on the pitch before the game to mark the closest home fixture to Remembrance Sunday on 11 November, as the club respects those who fell in conflict.

After the 1-0 defeat to the Gunners, the boss was asked about two of United's all-time legends after it was also confirmed that Sir Bobby Charlton is suffering from dementia.

"Of course, it’s sad news for everyone surrounding Manchester United and the fans of Nobby," said Ole.

“I had the pleasure of meeting him and he was a humble man.

“Of course, we, as a club, want to support Sir Bobby as well.”
