Ranked: United's latest winning PL goals

Thursday 12 October 2023 14:35

Manchester United have been synonymous with stoppage-time winners for years.

From Steve Bruce and John O’Shea to Federico Macheda and Marcus Rashford, countless Reds have endeared themselves to supporters by sticking the ball in the back of the net to clinch the game with just seconds left on the clock.

McTominay was United’s newest injury-time icon, stooping to head home a 97th-minute clincher against Brentford on Saturday, but where does our no.39’s effort rank when it comes to our latest winning goals in the Premier League?

After some extensive research, we’ve pulled up a top 10, with each goal scored in the 93rd minute or beyond…

10. ALEJANDRO GARNACHO v FULHAM, NOVEMBER 2022 (92:03)

Alejandro’s last-gasp game-settler at Craven Cottage ensured United entered the World Cup break in buoyant mood. The 18-year-old forward netted his first Reds goal in San Sebastian 10 days prior and beat the Fulham defence for pace before tucking a finish into the corner to catch Bernd Leno by surprise.

9. FEDERICO MACHEDA v ASTON VILLA, APRIL 2009 (92:04)

The day when 17-year-old Kiko went from unknown to United cult hero. The Reds recovered from 2-1 down but looked to have dropped two important points and ceded further ground to a resurgent Liverpool in the title race. The Italian had other ideas, though…

8. JI-SUNG PARK v WOLVES, NOVEMBER 2010 (92:25)

Ji opened the scoring in the first half, but the visitors responded through Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, formerly of this parish. As it was looking like we’d fall further behind Chelsea in the nascent title race, our unsung Korean midfielder pounced again with a superb individual effort in injury-time in front of the Stretford End.

7. MARCUS RASHFORD v WEST HAM, JANUARY 2022 (92:33)

Another strike at the Stretford End, this time at the close of a tight and, dare we say it, fairly dull meeting with David Moyes’s Hammers. United threw caution to the wind late on, with four attackers on the pitch, and Edinson Cavani stayed just onside before driving the ball across goal for Rashford to tap home.

6. PAUL SCHOLES v MANCHESTER CITY, APRIL 2010 (92:42)

Although Chelsea eventually pipped us to the title by a point, Reds still have fond memories of Scholesy’s late winner at the Etihad Stadium – the third and final stoppage-time winner we managed against our crosstown rivals in 2009/10 alone.

The famous kissing celebration between Scholes and Neville after the goal.

5. MARCUS RASHFORD v WOLVES, DECEMBER 2020 (92:53)

Due to the Covid-enforced lockdown, no fans were in attendance at Old Trafford to celebrate Rashy’s 93rd-minute winner. There will still have been plenty of jubilation in living rooms across the world at a goal which meant United moved just three points off top as 2020 turned to 2021.

4. MICHAEL OWEN v MANCHESTER CITY, SEPTEMBER 2009 (95:26)

The greatest derby moment of them all? An emerging City thought they’d nicked a point at Old Trafford through Craig Bellamy, as a helter-skelter contest entered added time. With seconds to go, though, they forgot to pick up Owen on the edge of the area and bedlam ensued across the red half of the city.

3. STEVE BRUCE v SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1993 (96:02)

“Bruce!” The cry from commentator Barry Davies echoes still, 30 years on, after the goal that kept United top and on course for a first championship in decades. Our centre-half’s timely header had Alex Ferguson celebrating and his assistant Brian Kidd on his knees, thanking a higher spirit. It stood as our latest Premier League winner until 2020…

2. SCOTT MCTOMINAY v BRENTFORD, OCTOBER 2023 (96:10)

Great Scott! McTominay’s quickfire double on Saturday carved out a piece of United history, as it was the first time in the Premier League that we’d won a game after trailing going into stoppage time. The Scotland international’s dramatic header still occurred more than three minutes earlier than our no.1, though…

1. BRUNO FERNANDES v BRIGHTON, SEPTEMBER 2020 (99:45)

Probably the only Premier League goal ever scored AFTER the final whistle had sounded, Fernandes’s perfectly slotted penalty came after VAR had belatedly awarded a handball against Albion’s Neal Maupay. Scored in the 100th minute, this effort will take some beating, even if we are seeing longer and longer periods of added time in the top flight nowadays.
