Daniel James claps the fans following Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Southampton

Ole: James is an example to everyone

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Daniel James is an "example for everyone" following his impressive start as a Red.

The 21-year-old was the standout performer in Saturday’s 1-1 with Southampton and netted his third goal in just four Premier League games during the encounter.

But it’s not just James’s attacking flair that has impressed Ole so far; the boss also highlighted his faultless mentality and outstanding work rate since joining from Swansea City over the summer.
“He’s come in and made an impact ever since day one in training - [today] he made a recovery run, won the ball, went forward,” said Ole, during his post-match press conference on Saturday.

“I think he’s an example for everyone. He’s our top scorer, and that comes from his personality, his habits. He’s humble, he works hard and he knows he can improve.

“He knows he could have scored a few more [against Southampton] and we’ll work with him to get his quality even higher. Then we’ll have a top, top player.”
In netting three times for the Reds, James has already achieved half the number of strikes he notched up in 39 appearances for Swansea and has demonstrated an ability to score different types of goals in his fledgling United career.

In Saturday’s encounter, the Wales international cut inside from the left flank and unleashed a bullet of a shot which left Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn helpless.

Last week against Crystal Palace, James executed a well-placed side-foot finish, while in the season opener against Chelsea he found the back of the net following a brilliant counter-attack from the Reds.

Our no.21’s contribution has been even more valuable given the injury to Anthony Martial, which ruled him out of Saturday’s game.

The Frenchman could be back in time for our next Premier League fixture, at home to Leicester City on 14 September, and Ole did admit he expects both Martial and Marcus Rashford to provide a huge amount of the Reds’ goals return this year, alongside James.

“Both Anthony and Marcus, they’ve played I don’t know how many games and they’ve had so many years in this football club, in this team,” said the boss.

“I expect them to be leading stars as well. And of course Dan James coming in as well, [although] we don’t expect him to score in every game he starts. Mason [Greenwood] was also unlucky [not to score at Southampton]. We’re on the right track,” he added.
